Recently my wife had a conversation with a friend of hers. Now, this friend is conservative. Both myself and my wife knew that going end. But we were still surprised by her comments a little bit because even though she is a somewhat simple and naïve person, she does not seem to be a stupid person.
Before you think that what I am about to describe is based solely on our obvious difference of political outlook, think again. Read the whole article and then decide.
In essence what this friend stated was two-fold:
- That Barack Obama was an evil president.
- That the press and public were harassing and badgering Donald Trump without cause.
Now as to her justification:
Barack Obama was evil: she did not have any examples nor any reason. She just knew he was evil. She had heard somewhere some bad things about but she couldn’t say what they were. Thus he was evil.
Harassing and badgering Donald Trump: they were making this stuff up about him. He said so. And the Republican’s said so. And some news agencies said so. When my wife pointed out that she, my wife, had heard Trump say some of the things he was accused of saying and seen some of the tweets he was supposed to have posted her remark was, “Well, I don’t know about that.”
Even if we do not admit it, we suffer from confirmation bias. This friend of my wife’s represents a large group of Trump’s base. She is devoutly religious, politically naïve, and does not have exposure outside of her circle of like-minded people. She sees no reason to question what these people are saying nor to check out the facts; after all, why would they lie to her?
You know, she may still dislike Obama if she knew all of the facts. Equally, she me still support Trump wholeheartedly if she knew the facts about him. I would like to think not, but I do not pretend to speak for others. I only wish that she, like so many others on both sides of the political spectrum would spend just a few minutes (I am not even asking for hours) to delve into a few facts about their leaders so that they can make some level of a sensible decision. The problem is;
