To Military People

Let me start by saying that I honor and respect your service. That is not a specious or trite remark given before I drop a bomb. I have several family members who have served in nearly every war that America has ever been involved in, both before and after the American Revolution. That does not keep me from making a somewhat negative comment however.

That comment is: Grow Up. Just because I respect and honor your service, I do not necessarily agree with your political outlook. In fact, given to an all volunteer military and its attraction to Conservatives, it is likely that I will not. Conversely, just because I disagree with you does not mean I do not honor your service or respect you.

That is why I say grow up. You service and your opinions are not mutually entwined, nor should it be. In fact, if you look at our history Liberals have made up the majority of the military in times of war. That is as it should be. After all, during times of war politics are not a deciding factor of who goes and there are more Liberals than Conservatives in the population.

Now you could argue that is not the case in the last 20 years and in some ways you may be true. But keep in mind these “wars” were fought with small standing forces made up of peacetime forces, National Guard, and mercenaries.

But, to get back to my point. I will always respect your service to our country. That does not give you any cache to force your opinion on me.
