Thinking About Bobby Kennedy

I have often thought back on how different my life would have been if Bobby Kennedy had not been assassinated. Not how the world would have been different; that is and has been a subject for another conversation. I am speaking totally selfishly and referring on how it would have been different for me.
I cared about Bobby being President. I cared about what he stood for. I thought that he cared about me, people like me, and the world at large. After he was assassinated, I did not see that, ever again. Since that day, I have never seen a politician that I felt was less involved in what he could personally gain than Bobby.
Even with the passage of Fifty Years, even with all of the suppositions and innuendos, the promise of his Presidency has never faded for me. I did not then, nor do I now, think he was infallible. That is kind of the point. He had his flaws but he acknowledged those flaws and grew, becoming a better person every step of the way.
There have been politicians and leaders that I have admired since then, but few that met that standard. In fact only one. His name was Nelson Mandela. Equally a man will a flawed past and an exemplary present when he came into power.
I honestly cannot think of a single person that I have ever felt the desire to follow with the same zeal as I did Robert Kennedy.
In fact, I have somewhat of a laisse faire attitude most of the time. I have chosen to not be very active in politics my whole life. Primarily because I did not see much that I could support in the long run. In fact, I must admit that I found the flaws of the individual to be a major factor in my decision not to support the candidate. Also, being practical, I would not and will still not support a candidate that does not have a chance of winning as I do not want to waste my vote regardless of their agenda.
Even how, as I look at this POS in the White House, I am being practical in hoping that we (that is to say Democrats) do not choose too liberal a candidate. I want a middle-of-the-road candidate to reduce the chance that the POS will get re-elected. You notice that I do not even care about the candidate’s qualifications or whether I like him or her. More’s the pity.
I admired Bobby Kennedy. I wished to emulate Bobby Kennedy. I wished to have the world he envisioned. I find that I fell short and am not worthy of his vision, I do not know what to do about it.
