I have been railing, justifiably, about just how bad Trump is and have been alluding to the fact that the Republicans could have done better by picking someone at random.

But maybe not!  Think about it.  The Republican Party has been kowtowing to so many special interest groups in order to be “meaningful” (aka electable) that they have fractionalized their message to such a degree that they cannot get a consensus because the other candidates only represented a fraction of the party.  This may mean that Trump, because of his notoriety/fame, was the best they could come up with.
