Stylish?

Now I know that I am an old fart and I am not in the mainstream when it comes to style.  Nor do I profess to know a damned thing about style.  But I do know ugly when I see it.  When I was growing up, there were styles that were ugly as well so don’t get me wrong.  I do not think of it as a new craze.  Style and ugly have been around for a long, long time.

But there is a difference now from back then.  That is in relationship to permanence.  People are now making permanent changes to their body as part of their style.  Back in my day, most of the changes were temporary – long hair, clothes, and such.   Now it is piercings, cuttings, brandings, and tattoos.

At some point in the future, style will probably have to make way for such things as making a living.  Quite frankly, some of that crap will have to take a back door to their style.

Now piercings can usually grow together enough as not to be too noticeable so not a problem.  But a split tongue, a brand on your face, or a visible tattoo?  Now I do not care what you think, that can be a problem.

My suggestion?  Be as stylish as what you want.  But keep in mind the old adage “never have a tattoo where the judge can see it”.  I am not being an old prude.  What I am really saying is do not make yourself offensive.  For instance: if you have piercings be sure you can remove them before you go to work if you want a job that pays better than minimum wage; if you have tattoos, either make them invisible when working – or – better yet have a good tattoo (there is no excuse for a bad tattoo).

In short, no matter how stylish you are now, plan for the future.  You will have to pay for it if you do not.
