Stupid Food Labels

I am tired of stupid food labels on packaging. Some are darned outrageous, such as:

  • Contains Nuts on a can of peanuts
  • Glutton Free on
    • box of rice
    • package of hard candy
    • chocolate bar
    • Beef Jerky
  • Wild Caught on a can of albacore
    • for the mentally challenged all albacore is wild caught.
    • for the real mentally challenged that buy this stuff, they pay more for the privilege of being stupid
  • Contains no hormones* on a package of pork snacks
    • I admit that this one was a little bit of a puzzler until I looked for the * and found out that the USDA does not allow hormones to be added to any pork products. Thus this notification is self-serving.

The American public deserves adequate food labeling and that has not always been the case. However, the above examples are aimed at the totally ignorant. To make matters worse many times they are trying to send a message to differentiate themselves from their competitors when none exists, which in a way borders on false advertising.

We need valid food labeling and that means hold the vendors accountable for stupid food labels as well.
