OMG
Saw one more show where they were touting “Soul Food”.
Most of my family had Southern roots and just PWT. We ate Soul Food every damned day of our lives and we just called it dinner. The only exceptions were greens, grits, and shrimp. And truth be told shrimp is and was not on the “Soul Food” table unless you come from an ancestry that lived on the flipping ocean.
The vast majority of southerners DID NOT THEN AND DO NOT NOW.
I grant you; the Soul Food movement is a great campaign. It gives an identity to a type of food, the food of the poor, or average, southerner. The fact that one ethnic group has laid claim to it is heartening in one way and disingenuous in so many other ways.
Remember:
- Soul Food is Poor Southern People’s Food, not just Black People.
- Shrimp and Grits is not on everyone’s plate.
- Fried Chicken was Sunday Supper, not every day.
- Biscuits were every day.
- Gravy was King.
- Stews were common fare.
In other words, Soul Food was just food.
