Shelter in Place – Part III

This is the first week of August, 2020.

I and my wife are still Sheltering in Place. Because it makes sense. This despite various government agencies loosening and tightening the rules as Covid-19 waxes and wanes in our particular area. We do this because government has failed us, particularly at the federal level. They are trying to make economic policy instead of medical policy and are playing with our lives. I will not get off on a tangent on this except to say I listen to scientists instead of politicians. I will not inject myself with bleach.

When we have to go out we wear facemasks and practice social distancing. Facemasks to protect others, social distancing to protect ourselves.

We will continue to do so until the is a solution to Covid-19, specifically a vaccine or Covid-19 has waned.

Some would say that it is easier for me and my wife because we are retired and we do not have to make a living. That is a valid point. And I have thought about that a lot.

I have family members who have retired early because of Covid-19. I have family members who are working exclusively from home because of Covid-19. I have family members who work in the service industry who are in danger because of Covid-19. I have family members who have lost their jobs because of Covid-19. While it has not directly affected me, I see the impact.

In my own life prior to retirement, I would have been fortunate because I would have been able to work from home as I was telecommuting very early on in the telecommuting world. It would have not been a significant hardship for me, save the one-on-one contact that was vital for developing a good product. However, such innovations as Zoom would have abrogated a great deal of those issues.

If that was not the case and I had to work I would have tried to be smart about it. I would have worn a facemask from Day 1. I would have tried to acquire N95 masks if I could find and afford them, especially if I were in direct contact with the public on a regular basis. Regardless, I would have worn a facemask. I would have practiced social distancing as much as practical. I know that social distancing is not practical for all jobs but I sure as hell would have tried. If I could not make these happen, I would looked for a job that would allow me these safety measures. In short, I would have tried to look our for myself.

So yes, I can Shelter in Place so I will continue to Shelter in Place. Yes, I have cabin fever, I do not like this at all. But I am alive to grip about it. I empathize with those who cannot Shelter in Place but that does not abrogate them from being and acting as safe as they can.

No matter what one’s circumstances: there is no excuse for congregating in large crowds, period. This is just a hotbed for spreading Covid-19. Every time idiots do this it just means two things. One, that people like me have to Shelter in Place that much longer. Two, the Covid-19 death toll rises. Your call.
