Rustic and Deconstructed

Right now I am watching a lot, a whole lot, of cooking shows. Too many if truth be told.

I am coming across two terms that intrigue me. One is rustic and another is deconstructed. Now I am going to tell you what they really mean.

Rustic: if you ask the people that make the stuff, I suppose they will tell you rustic is simple fair without a lot of fancy pretense. But that is not what it is. Not really. Rustic most generally comes across as “made by lazy chef/cook”. When you could have taken a couple of seconds to make it look nice, you slap it on the plate and call it rustic. When you do not take the time to trim the edges you call it rustic. In other words, lazy. It gives the home cook a bad name. Rustic my back end, it is just lazy.

Deconstructed: once again, if you ask the creator, they will tell you it is a way to rethink and represent the original dish with all of the pieces presented individually. Once again, is it not a little lazy? Think about it. I can give you a can of tuna, a jar of mayonnaise, and a loaf of bread and you have a deconstructed tuna sandwich. And if I am being really inventive, I can throw in a head of lettuce, a jar of pickles, maybe an egg, whatever. Deconstructed is just as lazy as rustic, only different.

Who would have thought.

  • I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet savvy so I’m not 100 certain. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
