Right now there are protests throughout the country because of police abusing their so-called authority to hurt and, in this case, kill a person of color. I do not know if race was a motivation in this police officer’s heinous actions. I do now that they were atrocious. The fact that he and those with him were immediately fired speaks volumes. The fact that he was criminally charged was also important.
Now as to the protests. Protests were inevitable and probably necessary. This kind of action needs to be put on the forefront of conversations and nothing does it better than a protest on the nightly news.
Sadly, even violent protests are somewhat inevitable. Without quality, unified leadership amongst the community that is protesting you end up with bad characters being involved, especially when then is a sense of disenfranchisement amongst them. This leads to violent actions. No matter how unacceptable, it has become inevitable.
But I have a cautionary note to the protestors: while violence, within reason, may be expected and tolerated, looting is not. Looting is not about protesting. It is theivery, pure and simple. Just because you are hiding behind or amongst the protestors, you are a theif. And the worst part is that you lose the support of many who would endorse the protest but see only the looting. Not that you care.
If I were a protest organizer my goals would be two-fold: 1) insure there was no damned looting, and 2) stop any violence. Then the protest would gain the support it deserves.
