Organic

Everywhere you go, you see Organic This and Organic That.  Almost always at a premium.  Now I understand the reason for the premium, believe it or not.  Oftentimes, you get charged premiums for things that have no actual value but for the perception of value, but in the case of organic it makes sense.

Organic is more expensive to produce.   It is more labor intensive to produce organic products.  Without pesticides, creative methods have to be utilized to grow the produce and to keep it healthy.  Also, organic products are generally not as productive per acre, per volume, etc. as modern farming methods.  Thus organic production costs more and they need to make a living.  It is as simple as that.  If you want organic products, you need to pay for it, and the cost is real.  So far, people have been willing to do so.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone’s choice of eating organically.  This is even when the value and efficacy of any benefits of organic products over non-organic products are pretty much non-existent.   Nor, as far as I have been able to ascertain, are there any taste differences either; a fact that has been proven time and time again in blind tastings.

I am not addressing non-humane growing conditions of poultry, for existence, I am only addressing the issue of organic farming and growing conditions.

On rare occasions, the organic proponents point out the affects of artificial pesticides.  These do need to be addressed, but that is not a reason to mandate organic now is it?  And this does not address the pollution issues that can be also included in organic, or for that matter any, farming.

What I find to be most troubling is that organic proponents seem to be unaware of is that organic farming is dangerous to the world’s population.  it has been estimated that if the world would go to organic, non-genetic, farming at least 2 billion (with a B) would die almost immediately through lack of food.  Organic dude/dudine: who dies?  Are you going to decide?  It organic that important?  Are you just on the most recent bandwagon?
