On Political Civility

When Ellen DeGeneres and George W. Bush attended a ballgame recently there was a lot of media activity.  Ellen responded by talking about the fact that she had conservative friends, among them George W. Bush.  She further followed up by saying that we should not let our political difference divide us.

That got me thinking.  You know, I have had political differences with friends, co-workers, and acquaintance all of my life.  Sometimes they were pretty severe and pretty divisive.   However, they have never been as they are now.  Nothing has prepared me for the divisiveness that I am seeing now.

I will say that I have not personally severed a personal relationship because of politics.  I cannot say the same about some of my (former) acquaintances.

What is different?  Simple.  I, and people like me, are much more adamant and personal about one person and one person only.  That is Donald J. Trump.  It is not about his politics.  Not really.  Oh, I will admit his politics rubs me wrong but that is not the real issue.  I did not the politics of Conservative/Republican Presidents in the past, but I did not loath them.  Donald Trump is loathsome.

He is so loathsome and despicable that he reaches new levels.  The depths of his indecency is so low that I cannot fathom how anyone can accept it.  The only reason that anyone can, in my opinion, is if they share the same despicable values.

I have made no secret of the fact that I find the elected Republican politicians and the everyday supporters to be as despicable as him has caused a rift in some of my relationship.  I find it interesting that they do not try defend themselves, they just “unfriend” me.  It just reinforces my contention that their position is indefensible.

I am willing to keep my friendships but they had better not discuss Trump (unless you are willing to listen to facts – and not FOX-facts).
