Oliver North – A Study in Hypocrisy

I just noticed that there is a program on the FOX News channel called “War Stories with Oliver North”.  I was aware of it but had never really come across it, just as I was aware that he had a syndicated radio program as well.  Along with this, I know that he has also had a best-selling book, reveling the world of his exploits.

In fact I remember the son of a my wife’s best friend almost wetting himself when Ollie was in town pimping his book, justifying his illegal actions – all in the name of Truth, Justice, and the American Way.  Kind of brings a tear to your eye doesn’t it?

Talk about redemption.  Although because of successful appeals he is not a convicted felon, but he admitted under oath to:

  1. Selling weapons to Iran against Federal law.
    1. These are the self-same Iranians, led by the Ayatollah Khomeini, who held American embassy personnel hostage not long before.
  2. Using the proceeds of those sales to fund the Contra rebels, once again explicitly against Federal law.
  3. Diverting some of the funds for his personal use.
    1. Said it was for the safety of his family if I remember correctly.

Now let us not quibble about it.  These are facts.  He did all of these things.  It was against the law.  He admitted to breaking those laws.  He had excuses but he did break Federal law.

The reason he did not go to jail was that he was granted immunity for most of his admissions.  And when he was convicted, the appeals courts ruled that there was too much grey area between his immune testimony and the evidence used to convict him.  Thus his conviction was overturned.

Do you know who jumped to his defense to get him his freedom?  The American Civil Liberties Union.  Yes, the very same organization that every conservative wonk hates with a passion, the one that George H.W. Bush maligned during his election campaign.  (As an aside, given H.W.’s supposed involvement in Iran-Contra he should be thankful for the ACLU to insure that Ollie kept his mouth shut).

Keep in mind, Ollie was possibly involved with good ol’ Manuel Noriega and the CIA drug activity in his “creative funding” efforts, although uncharged and unindicted. This is not heaping on, I am just reporting the findings of Congressional hearings.

Why am I “ripping” on poor old Ollie?  Because as I saw the show it occurred to me, just how hypocritical the Conservatives are.  Usually you hear an outcry about how crooks get away with breaking the law because of technicalities.  But when it is one of their heroes, no such outcry.

People, people, people
As a member of the Reagan Administration, Oliver North violated the law as he admitted under oath.
As a Marine Corps officer, Oliver North violated the UCMJ, which states that no SERVICE PERSON can commit an illegal act or obey an unlawful order.
 Oliver North may have been a heroic soldier when he served in combat but Oliver North is not a hero.
