Old Timey Players

I have had younger people who wonder how some of the members of various Hall of Fames got there.  Looking at the statistics they do not seem to fit in.  Ofttimes it seems to be because of the changes in the game really.  In basketball, the issue seems to be scoring (with exception of performances like Wilt’s 100 point game).  In football, it seems to be things like yardage, pass completions, percentages, etc.  In baseball, the opposite seems to be the case as the statistics of yesteryear were higher than they are now as the pitching position has become more and more specialized both hitting and pitching statistics do not compare to those of the past.

On a personal basis, I am most often questioned about Joe Namath, Gale Sayer, and Sandy Kofax.  With Sandy, they wonder was he really that dominant.  With Joe and Gale, they look at the statistics and often question whether they even belong in the Hall of Fame.  The consensus question of all of them is always “Were they really that good?”.  The answer is “Yes”.  Sandy Kofax’s record speaks for itself and, yes, he was that good.  In the case of Joe Namath and Gale Sayer, the statistics may be in question but you had to see them play the game.
