Dear Pope Francis,
You seem to be very thoughtful man and a thoughtful leader. You have seemed to take the world and issues of man into account in your vision on how to lead the Catholic Church. I daresay, unlike any Pope in history. There may have been others who have had your thoughts, your desires, and your willingness to act. The difference is that your have acted at some degree. You truly seem to care. And I greatly admire you even though I am not a Catholic nor do I contemplate becoming one at this time as I have many, many issues that keep me from becoming one which are not germane to this note.
I do have an issue that is bothering me however. It is an issue that I know that you are aware of, being born and living your life in Argentina. The Catholic Church is represented in what is called the “third world” in vast numbers, particularly in Central and South America. I live in North America and the Catholic Church is represented by Latin Americans in large numbers.
Two things that do not seem to be in dispute when one speaks of Latin America in general. One, the population is growing and growing fast. Two, the countries cannot support this growth agriculturally, industrially, or in any other meaningful way. That may be an Americans view but it truly seems to be the case. We have poverty in America; far, far too much of it and, in the main, totally unnecessary. So I am not unaware that I am somewhat in a glass house when I speak of poverty in Latin America.
However, I digress. I do not want to lose my focus on what I was writing you about. Here is the issue:
It seems to me that God probably does not want people to suffer inordinately. I think we can agree. So why do we have people living in major levels of food anxiety, often for most if not all of their lives, when the most common cause is too many children? Why is birth control such an anathema to the Catholic Church when so many of your followers are starving, and have been starving for generations?
