Letter to Earl Blumenauer

Congressman Blumenauer;

In the recent weeks since Donald Trump has become president, I have received more missives from you than in all of the years you have been in office up to this point.  I get it, I really do.  For the first time in your career, you are really scared.  So am I quite frankly.  Donald Trump seems to have neither the temperament, personality, ethics, morals, nor intelligence to be president.  Yet that does not change the fact that he is the president.

You, and a minority of congressmen and –women, are challenged with trying to stem the tide of both illegal and immoral actions of Donald Trump at a time when the majority of congress are utilizing their majority and a sympathetic ear in the White House to get some really disgraceful laws passed.  This means that even the illegal actions of the White House seem to take a back seat in their zeal to further their agenda.

But sadly, in too many ways I find you and your associates to be coconspirators, whether you believe you are or not.  The reason for that belief is based upon the very way you have my email address on file to send me your emails in the first place.

You see, almost exactly ten years ago, after the mid-term elections in 2010, I sent your office an email suggesting that now would be an ideal time to initiate impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush, specifically in regards to his use of signing statements to avoid implementing laws passed by Congress.

Your office (I am not foolish enough to believe that you would deign to actually look at or respond personally to my email) responded that as there were only two years left in was not worth it.  I must admit that because of my personal sense of right and wrong, I found that specious and insincere.  In fact, I was not in a good place personally at the time and I got rather upset with you so my subsequent emails probably were ignored.  But while the wording of those emails were volatile, the message was pertinent: if you let George W. Bush get away with exceeding the implied powers of the president you were just opening it up for someone else to do far worse.

I vowed not to vote for you again, primarily because of you insincerity.  You presented an image of integrity and honor.  However, when faced with an opportunity to stand tall you chose the politically expedient choice.  I have fulfilled this promise and probably always will.

And quite frankly, I cannot believe that this is much more than a method for you to raise personal awareness for you and possibly campaign funds – which is interesting since you have just about the safest district around.

You can say that these two situations are different and truth be told: one may have no bearing on the other.  That does not change the primary issue, which was allowing the setting of a precedent of letting a President run amok without Congressional oversite which started on your watch and you did nothing.  The secondary issue is I cannot find myself in a position to trust you to fulfill any promise you make because you do not have a good track record on that in the past.

Now, I know that I did not make much noise to cause you any consternation last time and I may not this time either.  However, there are a couple of differences.  One, I am on Facebook and I will post this message there.  Two, I have a website (WeIsDumb.com) and it will be posted there as well.

Personally, I feel that you may be fighting above your weight what with this being more involved than unpowered, two-wheeled, transportation devices.

Sincerely,

Robert G. Boynton

Update: A month has pass with no response.  Surprised?  NOT ME!

  • Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such excellent information being shared freely out there.
