Invoking Historical Republicans

I am getting sick and tired of members of the Republican Party touting in invoking the names of historical Republicans to give them some form of cache and association. Specifically, they hammer home the names of Abraham Lincoln as if he were the God of the Republican Party and Theodore Roosevelt as if he were his demi-God.

But there is a distinct problem with this assertion. It is completely wrong-headed. Because the Republican Party they belonged to is completely different than the Republican Party today. Yes, the current Republican Party is more Conservative and the Democratic Party is more Liberal but it goes deeper than that. Keep in mind that in the days of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt that vast majority of Black and minority voters voted Republican as well. That is not the case anymore.

Can you imagine the current Republican Party championing human rights like Abraham Lincoln? I certainly cannot and current history proves me out. Can you imagine the current Republican Party championing the environment and the National Parks System like Theodore Roosevelt? I certainly cannon and current history proves me out.

Can you imagine Abraham Lincoln being a Republican today? Can you imagine Theodore Roosevelt being a Republican today?> Can you imagine a Republican getting most of the minority vote in a general election? To all of these, I would say that is a resounding NO!

So the next time some Republican invokes these Historical Republicans remember they are grasping for an association that they would not have today and for an association that they would not support if these people were alive today.

Another sign of hypocrisy.
