Ice Milk

When I was younger, there was a product called Ice Milk that was sold in all of the grocery stores.  I was essentially Ice Cream that was made with milk instead of cream.

Now I am sure that some people were concerned with the fact that it was lower in fat content.  However, the primary purpose of the product seemed to be that it was a lower cost product.  In short, it was a cheaper version of ice cream.  I know that it was what our family had most often – we were a large family where volume was an issue.

I defy you to find Ice Milk anymore.  Marketing has replaced Ice Milk with Light/Lite Ice Cream.  Essentially it is the same product, only now it is upscale.  Why was it not allowed in the past?  Simple, Ice Cream had to have a certain fat content to be called Ice Cream in those days.

And the new Light/Lite Ice Cream?  Is it still a low cost alternative to Ice Cream?  Fat Chance (pun intended).
