How We Got Here

Re-post from retired page

I know that I have been chastised for calling Trump a Nazi.  Despite his inability, so far, to implement his totalitarian, fascist, beliefs and policies does not mean that I am wrong.  Quite the contrary.  I think that there is substantial proof with his own words and deeds to support my assertions.  The only thing that has kept him in check so far is that, unlike Germany in the 1930’s, we have a stable form of government.  We have a government with sufficient checks and balances, with sufficient balances of power, that the POS cannot assert his desires unilaterally.  I say so far only because, despite the willingness of the Republicans to hold their nose and put their own agenda ahead of the Country’s well-being, they have not crossed the line to rubberstamp the POS’s ideas yet.

Even though it serves no real purpose other than to satisfy myself, I have tried to see how this kind of situation could happen.  How could someone so obviously unqualified, selfish, and unwilling to put the needs of the country before his own agenda actually get there?

Truthfully, although Trump is, without a doubt, the worst of the worst, he is not the first totally unqualified person in the White House as of late.  When I think of qualifications, I look at someone who has a plan to address the multitude of issues that need to be addressed as President.  I see someone who is not a single issue, single solution, person.  I see someone, experience or not, who has exposed himself to a wide range of ideas and opinions.  Finally, I see someone who surrounds himself with highly qualified people.

Using that guideline, we need only to look at George W. Bush to see someone who was equally unqualified.  He was elected based upon his name and his name only.  He was unqualified and incompetent.  The only thing he has going for him is that he turned out to better than the current POS.  Some faint praise that.

But this is not really a diatribe on how bad W was or how bad the current POS is.  It is more of an attempt, for my own edification, on how the heck this whole thing happened.

I think it all started in the late 1980’s.  A dude by the name of Rush Limbaugh started broadcasting nationally, Not only was he conservative, he was a racist, a misogynist, a hate-monger, and, most of all, a liar.  The conservatives just ate him up.  Moreover, they are still eating up his shtick.   Liberals, and non-liberals who like the truth, laugh at him, ignore him, and dismiss him.  Nevertheless, he started legions of people who felt disenfranchised all of a sudden feeling like they had a national voice.  The fact that it was based upon lies did not then and does not now seem to matter.

Then in the early 1990’s when the conservatives decided they did not like the way the news was being reported.  They claimed a liberal bias, which I personally found somewhat ludicrous given the makeup of the major network leadership and the background of many of the reporters.  For instance, one of the most biased reporters Sam Donaldson was a member of Young Republicans for Nixon in college.  So low and behold, we get Fox News.

Then they had the audacity to present slanted reporting, “news” and otherwise, and calling it Fair and Balanced.  Eventually, they could not perpetuate this lie anymore and changed their reporting to We Report. You Decide. Obviously, they were having difficulty with the original BS as well.

All it did was become another avenue for lies to be perpetuated on a national scale attracting people who wanted to believe so damned bad that their biases and hatreds were substantiated that they would flock to the crap being spread.

Then we get to 2016 and we add to this mix social media where everyone who has an ax to grind can become a “source” of truth.  I would like to blame all of the crap on the Russian intervention on Facebook and other places.  Oh sure, they are a part of it and maybe the majority of the problem.  They were not alone though.  There were plenty of jackasses and fools who were ready and willing to lie to further their agenda.

The worse part, we seemed to laugh at the liars as fools.  We did not call the fools who passed on the lies, dismissing them instead of calling them to task.  We did not spend the time to question anything that was said, good or bad, when it was so damned important for our future.

The price: first George W. Bush (pretty bad), second Donald J. Trump, next … Your Call
