I was watching “Elementary” the other day. I enjoy the show. I think the writing and acting is above par.
But I have noticed that Lucy Liu’s character quite often dresses in what would be considered male-centric suits, right down to the tie. Not that there is ever any indication that she is trying to pass herself off as a man. But one cannot say that she is not dressing like a man. Not gender-neutral, but male. In effect, dressing as a female transvestite.
That she is doing this on a consistent basis without comment shows how ubiquitous this style has become. I know that I have seen this form of dress, in one stage or another, for decades. When I have commented on it I have been told that I was exaggerating the impact but looking at the dress that Lucy Lui has affected, am I?
Admittedly, there is not often an attempt to look male as is often the case with a male transvestite but this is a case of inconsistency of people’s perception and reaction to how other’s dress.
