Although I fully realize the obvious issues that it will create, I think that there is only one realistic solution to the illegal drug problem. That is to legalize all drugs.
Now hear me out. Keep in mind that people who do not use drugs now will more than likely still not use drugs even if they are legal. Whether illegally obtaining prescription drugs or obtaining illegal drugs, those that are so inclined to use drugs currently seem to have no problem getting them right now. I see the legality as a false barrier to keeping drugs out of the hands of people.
By legalizing drugs, we insure, by controlling the manufacturers, the purity of the drugs. We can use taxation to pay for drug rehabilitation and treatment. After all, that is not going to go away. If anything, it may increase. Especially given that fact that it is no longer a legal but a medical issue and can be addressed as a form of medical treatment. Use of drugs, whatever kind it is, is not necessarily a disease but addiction is considered a disease. Treat it as such and pay for it by the sale of the drugs themselves.
Here are the greatest benefits. First, we no longer put people in jail because they are addicted. If they commit crimes to support their addiction or commit crimes while under the influence, they will still be jailed but this will still reduce the burden on the penal system dramatically. Lastly, and most importantly, drugs will no longer be paying for criminal activities.
Obviously, a lot of checks and balances have to be worked out to keep it from being a situation where people do not go overboard. We have to try to attempt to keep people from overdosing or self-medicating because the drugs are available. However, I think these things can be worked out. Besides, the benefits seem to exceeds any problems I can see.
