I had an epiphany (a.k.a., Brain Fart)
Retired at 70, I look back at the significant negative affects that affirmative action had on my education and career. There is absolutely no argument that I was affected; quite often being pushed aside by someone whom I clearly was more qualified for the position than they were. And it wasn’t like I was economically or socially superior to those I had to give my place to. Their background and mine, as far as family access to education was not that different. When I got my education/training I still had to step aside for real or implied quotas. Hell, I needed a job too.
Those are facts; pure and simple. It isn’t whining, but it is the down side of affirmative action. In order to give someone a leg up, you have to knock out the legs from someone else. TRUTH.
Now for the epiphany. If I were a minority, be it female or African American or Hispanic or whatever, I would probably not be 70 today. Why? Because I would be dead, killed in protest against the inequalities in society, why justice is taking so damned long, and shining the light on the hypocrisy of American society in general.
Therein lies the conundrum. Both arguments are right. Both arguments are real. Both arguments need to be addressed AND FIXED before America can fix itself. I will probably not be here to see it but do not forget one in order to fix the other. They are the same problem.
Why? Discrimination is discrimination. The longer we allow or ignore one for the benefit of the other, the worse it gets. Think I am wrong. How do you think we got here in the first place
