Different Business Culture

My wife has to have some cardiac rehab. Now we have a hospital facility only about a mile and a half from our house that has a rehab program. Score: or, you would think.

When contacted them, they said that their program was three days a week; on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. After all, they need their long weekends. In any case, because of dialysis Thursday was out for my wife. Her cardiac surgeon said two days a week was fine so a referral was set up.

Nay, nay said the center. If you could not commit to three days a week, they did not want her. When my wife mused that she would have to consider her options, the person on the phone hung up.

She then contacted another program further away from us. They stated that they had a program available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They further stated that if you couldn’t make it every day that was OK because any therapy was better than no therapy. They even volunteered to call the surgeon to arrange for the referral.

I really do not think that the people at the two facilities are remarkably different, one group of people being more caring than the other. Quite the contrary, I think it is more a matter of corporate culture. Even if there is no official dictate on this (and I bet there is), the corporate culture would dictate the difference in attitude. At first, I thought that maybe one was a “for profit” hospital and one was not. That is not the case, so go figure.
