Confederate Monuments

I just had a thought:

Anyone who has traveled throughout the Southern part of the United States or for that matter have seen pictures of cities and towns in that part of the country have seen Confederate Monuments.  Sometimes the monument is dedicated to the “Confederate Soldier” but most often the monument is dedicated to some local notable who fought for the Confederacy during the Confederate War.

I know that there is a lot of controversy about these monuments.  How they are representative of the slavery era of America and how they celebrate a past that we should not be celebrating, and on and on and on.  At the same time, people living in those communities say that they have the right to remember the heroes of their past and that it is not in support of slavery, but a celebration of their glorious past – or some such.

I have a brain fart though: what would these people, or anyone for that matter, think if they traveled throughout Germany and come across statues to WWII German Soldiers, including SS, in full Nazi Regalia in every city and town they visited.  I think that they would find it a little troubling.  Don’t you think?  Now tell me what the difference is!
