Chicken Hawks

I have always been very critical of the so-called Chicken Hawks. Not to be confused with homosexual predators of young males, I am referring to that pantheon of draft evaders, generally from the Vietnam War era, who are so pro-war now. The usual suspects include such names as George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Rush Limbaugh. Obviously, this is not all inclusive but it gives you an idea. And we can include The Donald amongst these names, can we not. Lest we not forget, we should also include John Wayne in this list as well.

I had an epiphany. I had always attributed their actions to cowardice, followed by a future need to reinvent themselves for political or social reasons. I realize that, like all things in life, this is probably an unfair simplification.

While I am sure that there was some of the cowardice factor involved, I cannot totally fault this. After all, who wants to go in harm’s way voluntarily especially if we are involved in a unpopular war. Obviously, both personally and publicly, this is something that is not easy to admit. Many people, including some of those on the list fall into that category I believe.

Then there is possibly people who were anti-war but because of the family associations, political affiliations, or changing public sentiment find it necessary rewrite their personal history. I do not know if any of those on my little list fall into that category, but it is possible.

The final grouping that occurred to me are those who just plain found it too inconvenient to serve their country. For whatever reason, they just did not want to go into the service. Take John Wayne. His career was just going too good for him to go. So he didn’t. One could argue that he did more good than he would have done in uniform. But his gung ho attitude post war was in no small part a reflection of, dare I say, embarrassment (at least I hope so).

In any case, I feel it was inappropriate to paint all with the same brush. I still do not like their crappy, superior attitude that they did not earn.
