Bravery by Another Name

They did a live replay of some All In The Family & The Jefferson’s episodes on Saturday night. I have yet to view them even though I have them recorded and plan to watch them later. I was much more interested in watching them before I watched the post-broadcast show interviewing some of the participants who discussed the show and their roles in it.

In the overall picture, the issue I have is minor. The issue is minor but it bespeaks of a much, much darker issue.

I am referring to the actor who reprised the Helen Willis role. She addressed the situation whereby the episode they were reprising had the Helen Willis character saying the N-word in the original broadcast. The current actor said that when this issue came up in the reboot, they decided to say the word on the live broadcast but to bleep it for TV. She said that she felt that it was a “responsible middle-ground” to “honor” the original broadcast but compromised for the present climate.

Bullcrap! It was a copout. They were trying to have it both ways. Showing their pseudo-bravery and at the same time to damned afraid of offending someone.

I know that they were probably not even alive during the original broadcast but do they think for a moment that using that word was any more acceptable then than it is now? If they do, I have news for them. It was not acceptable then any more than it is now. Was it more prevalent? Yes. Acceptable? No.

The reason that it was used in the original broadcast was for shock value and to make a statement. The reason that it was not used today was because they were too damned afraid of offending anyone, even if they could have made a strong positive point by using the N-word.

Once again, cowardice is called bravery by the cowards.

(Oh, before anyone suggests that I am hypocritical because I failed to use the N-word in this post, think again. There was no value, no point, to be made by using it. To use it would be self-serving and hateful. THAT would have been wrong. My point is made without printing it.)
