So You Have a Degree

Why do people find it necessary to publicize unnecessary degree information.  For instance, I saw a TV program where a prosecutor had her name with the “J.D.” following her name.  For goodness sakes all graduates of law school are entitled to that title.  Very few who practice law find it necessary to add that to their name.

I am dealing with another person who, in one single conversation mentioned at least 4 times that she had a Master’s Degree.  In fact it is on her business card.  It has absolutely no bearing on her business credentials or professional standing, but it is out there in spades.

Many years ago, I encountered a person who brought up her Masters in conversation in order to try to establish credibility, but that was in the early 1980’s when women had even more trouble than now being taken seriously.  The only thing was, in her case at least, her degree was associated to her profession so there was credibility in her mentioning it.  The issue was that, after the first 20 or so times, we all go it.

Is it ego.  Is it pride.  Is it an inferiority complex.  I do not know.  But it is weird to me.  I never dissed a person for lack or formal education, nor given them special credence because of it.
