You have probably have heard about the supposed raise in the incidents of autism.  I say supposed simply because I do not believe the facts will support this claim.

To understand this issue, you have to understand a couple of things.  Most people when they hear the term autism think of “Rain Man” or something of that nature, which is not even fair because the character portrayed was a savant.  But you get the picture.  To most people, the concept of autistic is someone who is emotionally and mentally contained so that they have trouble communicating with the outside world.

I understand that belief.  When I was growing up, I think that was probably the main use of the term autistic.  Not so now.  Now they term autism is embracing all kinds of mental, social, and emotional issues that were not identified as autistic in the past.  Hell, one that I seem to suffer from, Asperger’s Syndrome, is in the autism range.  Want a fun fact?  Asperger’s Syndrome was not even classified when I was growing up. They never even classified it until I was in my 30’s.  So I avoided being autistic because they did not know I was yet.

The reality, as far as I can tell, is that the rise in autism is completely and totally based upon the reclassification of people as being autistic.   On the one hand, if people need help and get it I am all for it.  On the other hand, if you classify everyone as being different it gives them an excuse to fail and blame the failure on the somebody or something else.

So if you hear about the rise in autism, do not be among the stupid who blame immunizations, look at reclassifications.
